VELOCIPEDES

PHOTOGRAPHY SERIE (2022-2023)

These “bone crushers” arrived on European roads in the 19th century. Initially, cycling was a pastime for wealthy young men. It took some time, and despite objections, a determined group of women swapped their skirts for trousers and mounted their bicycles. The bicycle offered a chance for a more independent and freer way of life. Today, it remains by far the most common mode of transport worldwide and, in many ways, has become a symbol of eco-friendly, sustainable living. Or is cycling on the brink of extinction, with scooters and electric bikes taking over the streets?

This exhibition series is an ode to bicycles, which have adorned cityscapes for centuries. Bicycles are so commonplace that we often overlook them, just as we may have overlooked the origins of this exhibition. Without realizing it, I have gathered photographs of bicycles from places as far apart as Sweden and Portugal. I am fascinated by how bicycles form little compositions within urban landscapes. Here you can see some of the photos from the series.

And actually the Finnish word ‘polkupyörä’ was invented by Finnish photographer I.K. Inha.
